Pragpur Heritage Village

Pragpur heritage village is in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Pragpur was founded in the late 16th century by the Kuthiala Soods in memory of Princess Prag Dei of the Jaswan Royal family. The area of Pragpur was part of the principality of Jaswan whose chief, in the late 16th or early 17th century, charged a band of learned men, led by a Kuthiala Sood, to find a suitable place to commemorate Princess 'Prag' of his royal lineage. Pragpur Himachal Pradesh is an ornamental village with unchanged shops, cobblestone streets, old water tanks, mud-plastered walls and slate-roofed houses. Do you know why Pragpur is known as the “First Heritage Village of India”?  The answer is - due to its unique architecture and pristine beauty, the state government of Himachal Pradesh declared Pragpur as the country's first Heritage Village in December 1997. Do you know the meaning of Pragpur? The  Prag means "pollen" in Sanskrit and pur means "full of", so Prag-pur means "full of pollen", which rightly describes the area when it is ablaze with blossoms in spring.

The nearby village of Garli is a part of the Heritage Zone. This Heritage Zone has now been brought under a Special Area Development Authority (SADA) and is integrated with the national wetland -Maharana PratapSagar (Pong Dam) Tourism Development Project.  Located at an elevation of 2000 feet above sea level, Heritage Village Pragpur is ideally suited to explore the Kangra Valley.

Places of interest:-
The places of interest nearby the heritagevillage Pragpur are Lala Rerumal Haveli built in 1931 by a Rais of Pragpur, which has a Mughal style garden, pleasure terrace and a large water reservoir. Butail Mandir, Chaujjar Mansion, courtyards of the Sood Clans, an ancient Shakti Mandir and atiyalas or public platforms are the pride of this heritage village. Some of other famous places are like:-

1. Jwalamukhi Temple: - One of the famous Shakti Peethas, Jwalamukhi Temple is located 35 kms on the southern side of the Kangra Valley. Overseeing the Dhauladhar mountain range, this Jwala Mata Mandir is set amid the rolling hills and does not house any statue of God. Jwala Devi symbolising the God of Light is worshiped in the Jwalamukhi Temple situated in the Himachal Township Jwalamukhi. Jwalaji is also called the 'She of the Flaming Mouth' or the 'Flaming Goddess'. As per the Hindu mythological tales, Sati's tongue fell off in this place while Lord Vishnu was cutting through the carcass of Sati. It is said that even the Pandavas visited this sacred site.

2.  Chintpurni Mata Temple: - ChintpurniTemple lies in one of the highest peaks of the Solan Singhi Range. There are various kinds of hotels in Chintpurni for the night stay but none can match the grandeur of The Chateau Garli. The Garli Kangra Heritage Zone is the best place to unwind after sightseeing. The Chintpurni hotel rates are also on the higher side with little or no facilities which make The Chateau Garli a more preferred option amongst the tourists.

3.  Kangra Valley: - The Kangra Valley is also known as the Devbhoomi with mighty valleys, hills, mountains, and peaks of the Himalayas and abode of several temples and holy places. The most famous Kangra Mandir is believed to be erected above the charred breast of Sati. In the heart of the Kangra city lies the most well-renowned temple of the Kangra Valley, the Bajreshwahari Temple, also known as the Kangra Devi Temple. There are many hotels in Kangra and in its surrounding villages. But, The Chateau Garli in the heritage village offers the best amenities of all.
